Drum Audio to MIDI: Can This Converter Detect Drum Hits?

Not reliably as drum MIDI. This browser converter estimates one stable pitch in each audio frame and writes pitched MIDI notes. A drum transient may have little stable pitch, and this tool does not classify kick, snare, or hi-hat hits or assign a drum map. A pitched percussion sample may produce a note, but that is a pitch estimate, not a recognized drum hit. Try one isolated sound below and inspect the result before downloading.

TEST YOUR OWN SOUND

Check one isolated hit

Use a short recording you are allowed to process. The preview shows pitched notes the detector found; it is not a drum-pattern transcription.

SOURCE-CODE CHECK

Pitch is required

The current script checks frame level, searches for a repeating waveform pattern within the selected frequency range, and returns one pitch or no pitch. It never labels an event kick, snare, or hi-hat. Lowering Silence threshold may admit a quiet frame, but it cannot make a random transient into a reliable pitched note.

DIFFERENT TASK

Hit timing is not note pitch

A drum-MIDI transcription must decide that a hit occurred, identify its drum voice, and place an event on the timeline. This converter's output is a line of pitched notes. Even if it exports one note from a resonant hit, the note number does not mean a drum-pad identity.

A visible waveform peak can indicate a hit without supplying the repeating pattern this pitch detector needs.
Local test inputHow it was madeObserved on this site's public toolMeaning
Pitched referenceTwo-second, 440 Hz sine wave at 48 kHz, mono, fixed amplitudeConversion finished locally; 1 note, MIDI 69–69The test path can detect a stable pitch.
Noise-burst referenceThree short decaying white-noise bursts at 0.25, 0.75, and 1.25 seconds, 48 kHz mono, deterministic random seed“No stable notes were detected.”For this particular unpitched synthetic sample, no note passed detection. This is not a universal drum accuracy result.

Both files were generated locally for this check and run on the public homepage with default controls. The tone is not a recorded instrument; the noise bursts are not a real drum kit. Download the original test recipe and observation sheet to repeat or adapt the comparison.

IF YOU STILL WANT TO TEST

Keep the source narrow

Try one isolated pitched percussion note, such as a ringing tuned sample, and inspect whether the preview follows its sustain. Hold the same source fixed when changing one control. Do not interpret a stray pitched note as a correctly recognized drum event.

IF YOU NEED A DRUM PATTERN

Choose the right workflow

Use a tool designed to find transients and assign drum sounds, or manually mark hit times in a DAW. If you have separate kick and snare stems, work with those separately. This site's polyphonic guide covers overlapping pitched parts; that is a different limitation.

QUICK ANSWERS

Drum audio-to-MIDI questions

Can I turn a drum loop into drum MIDI here?

Not reliably. This tool estimates one pitched note at a time and has no drum-hit classifier or drum map. Use a transient-to-drum-MIDI workflow for a drum pattern.

Why did an isolated drum hit produce no notes?

It may not provide a stable repeating pitch that passes the detector. The local synthetic noise-burst test above produced no stable notes, but your recorded hit may behave differently.

What if a drum sample does produce a note?

Treat it as a pitch estimate from that sound, not as a recognized kick, snare, or hi-hat. Check the preview and the downloaded file before editing.

Will lowering Minimum note detect every drum hit?

No. Minimum note filters grouped pitch estimates after detection. It cannot turn a frame with no detected pitch into a drum event.
